Bio:

Mariann has worked at the main branch of the Dunkirk library for 23 years. She takes pride in the library programs she has implemented in the past 10 years, increasing the city’s literacy level by approximately 5%. Mariann is skilled in the science of information storage and retrieval, is widely read, and is fluent in 5 languages. Her special area of research is natural history, and she was an important player in the documentation of the range of the black-backed booby, a rare coastal species.

The preservation and promotion of knowledge is important to Mariann as a testament to the spirit of the sentient and animal creatures, whom she loves dearly… in an abstract and generalized fashion. She hates worm, bugs, and dirt (which cause parchment and paper to deteriorate more quickly), and abhors the suppression of intellectual exploration. She likes children, when they are clean and quiet.

Mariann has lived in Dunkirk all her life, and currently shares a house and small garden in town with her aging aunt and uncle, who are mostly independent but like a little extra help now and again. She has traveled occasionally on business such as procuring rare texts and participating in bird surveys. Her friends are her research associates, who love to discuss obscure knowledge as much as she does. She was engaged to be married at the age of 22, but the engagement was broken off by her fiance. He claimed to find some of her research repulsive. She dived into her studies to cover a broken heart and has never resurfaced socially. She fears physical contact with adults who are not family members, but does not have the opportunity to confront this fear often.
